Here are some fun things to explore, and some of our favorite features of the HCPD Website.

    10. Photo Galleries

Lots of opportunities here, but still very much in the development stage

    Currently includes

    • A gallery for helping identify photos
    • A gallery for HCPD events

    9. All of the HCPD Journals

There is so much history in these journals! Each issue is available here, although the last 5 years are for members only.

    8. Annotated Tables of Contents of the HCPD Journals

Browse through the articles, or just use the Ctrl-F  (PC) or the Command-F (Apple) keys to search for a name or article.

    7. Links

Find links to Blogs, Facebook Groups, Podcasts, and Webpages of all kinds.

If you know of one that would be helpful, you can send it to hcpd2020@gmail.com to be added to the list!

    6. Don Norman Files +

Files of descendancy charts which have been researched through the years by the late Don Norman. He generously gave full permission for HCPD to continue using them as well as to continue adding records to them.

These records are still being transferred to the new webpage, but there are more than 500 there already. If you are looking for a name that is not yet on this section, email hcpd2020@gmail.com to inquire.

A running report as to the progress is included on the page.

    5. Online Store

Items that we have for sale include new and used books of all kinds. We plan to add other items regularly.

    4. Gleanings from Social Media

Not everyone has Facebook! This is a new feature where we are gathering some of the best images and comments that have been shared. We don't want Facebookless folks to miss out.

    3. Library Catalog

Our library has grown from materials that members would bring to share with each other during early gatherings to a collection that is well into the thousands! Many are one-of-a-kind materials, and many are also online to be available from wherever you may be.

Until everything is transferred, the records from the former catalog have been saved to a pdf and you can consult them by clicking on the grey box on the library catalog page.

A running report as to the progress of getting items included in the new online catalog is included on the page.

    2. Bread Crumbs Across Top to Find Your Way Around

Across the top of each page on the HCPD Website, you can easily find how you have arrived at your current location and go back to the Home Page.

    1. Site Search

One of the things we are most excited about is the Site Search on the Home Page. Enter any name or term into the box, and you will get a list of all of the pages where that occurs. Very handy!

One thing to remember is that it won't search the databases (such as Don Norman Files + ) so you will need to search those separately. But, that is pretty easily done by clicking the Magnifiying Glass on the top right of the database.

    Progress is being made!

Much has been transferred from our old site to the new one, but we are still in transition. Right now seems like "Crazy Time" for sure.

Two of the major areas that are still in between are the Library Catalog and the Don Norman Files. A good deal has already transitioned, but there is more to come. On those pages, I am including an update so you can tell what is already there and workarounds for how to get information you needd in the meantime.

There are other areas where there is still a lot of information to be added to databases, but I have gone ahead and posted them so that you can see what kind of things are coming. The great news is that this will go even faster if you might like to volunteer a bit of time to enter some things.

At this point we are still learning about some great features of these new tools that are available to us, and we are looking forward to bringing new things to the website.

Be sure to check back often! We hope that you will find that it is all

Three great tools for finding what you are looking for on our website!

    1. On the Home Page, you can enter any word into the search box, and you will get a list of all the pages on the website that include that term. Try a name, place, or whatever it is that you would like to find. Then, you won't have to remember where to look for it!

    2. There are several databases on the website, where the information is in tables. Click here to learn more about how to sort these records. Oneof the best ways is to just search the entire thing at once! You can do that by clicking the icon on the top right side, and just entering a name or term.

    3. If you just plain get lost, you can always find your way back to the home page by looking at the top of the page and following the "breadcrumbs" back. This is at the top of each page on the website. A map!

In early 2020, Patty and I set out to refresh the HCPD website. For several months we consulted with a wonderful lady in Arizona who helped us to think through the layouts and to find ways to streamline our content. About the time that we felt that we had a good grasp on things, we received the surprising news that the company we had been using was going out of business. This was especially devastating because everything (membership, online store, online library catalog, databases, email, and more) was about to disappear! We went into several weeks of “harvesting “ all of our content from the old site (and learning how to do that).

Some  genealogy and historical societies went into a wait and see mode. Maybe someone else would buy the business and they would not have to change anything after all. Most of all, they would not have to leave the familiar.

True to our pioneering nature, though, HCPD decided to see what new options might be available - and maybe even better. We spent about a month researching, getting insight from experts, asking questions, and watching an incredible number of tutorials on YouTube. We did several trials. Because of the pandemic quarantine, we spent a lot of time conversing on the phone and Zoom.

In the end, we chose to go with the Wild Apricot platform, which did a great job with membership, email, website, store, and blog. However, it was not going to help us with library catalog or databases. Enter TinyCat from LibraryThing and AirTable. We have concluded that these give us more control over our data and design than the old system, and they all work together beautifully. This was key for us as we didn't want to find ourselves with all of our eggs in one basket again!

Each of these come with a free version! Of course, upgrading to various levels was necessary along the way. We have found it all to be both manageable and exciting.

If you would like to try any of these for your own projects, here is the information about the free versions:

    Wild Apricot

    • Free Version gives you 50 contacts, limits you to one administrator, and gives you 100MB of free storage for images and documents on the website.
    • What you don't get with the free version is  the ability to do Online Payments, create a Custom Domain, Theme Overrides, Site Search Gadget, and Scheduled Emails, Online Store, Mobile Apps, or Chat Support.

    LibraryThing (TinyCat)

    • Both LibraryThing and TinyCat are 100% free for personal use. By using this, you can track your own collections at home.

    Free version includes:

    • Unlimited bases (think Excel Spreadsheet that does more)
    • 1,200 records per base
    • 2GB of attachments (photos, documents) per base
    • Grid, calendar, kanban, form and gallery views

If you decide to try this out for yourself, please use this referral invitation which can give HCPD credits toward upgrades later on.

We hope that you will find the new website to be helpful. Things are still being transferred over and new ideas are coming to us all the time. Please be patient as we continue to get things ready. If something is confusing, please email me at hcpd2020@gmail.com and I will do my best to straighten it out.

For now, we are still finding out that we can do about anything -- just not all at once. Watch this blog for updates as things progress. Thank you for your patience!!
